Hi Mary, I thought I would check with you at your site as I have sent you a couple of emails and am not sure if you received them. I would love to have any extra family pictures and the copy of the extra Shute & Merchant recipee booklet. Also I queried whether you know how our ancestor John Merchant of Braintree 1630 got to these shores? Have you ever visited his brothers house in Ipswich. The Merchant-Choate house located just after the bridge when you go buy the new high school? Some say this is the oldest surviving plantation house in America. William Merchant arrived in Ipswich with Winthrop's people somewhere between 1634 and 1639. Please let me know if you get this message. Best Wishes Dean Merchant email havpen@yahoo.com

Hi Mary: I work at the Archives Center at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, and we have a collection that might interest you. It is the United States Fish Commission Records, and in the collection are two original pen and ink drawings done at the Shute & Merchant plant in 1882. One of the images (poorly cropped) you might be able to see at http://americanhistory.si.edu/archives/d8256a.htm I could send you a photocopy of the two drawings if you'll provide your mailing address. Both images were drawn in 1882 by Henry Wood Elliott.::::Hope you find this information of interest. Wonderful website! Treasure-trove of information for a family historian, such as myself. My great great grandfather's death remains a mystery to our family. The story is that he may have been lost at sea in a Gloucester fishing trip, between 1910 and 1920. Does the name MANUEL R. CATON, husband of IDA SILVA CATON, appear in any documents regarding portuguese fishermen of Gloucester during that decade?::Email: dllj_1150@yahoo.com

My sister, Roberta Sheedy, would have enjoyed viewing this website. Thank you

For Joanne McKinnon: Thank you so much for visiting the site. Your sister did see my earliest version of the site, and was a wonderful help to me. She is acknowledged for the use of the Harbor map that shows where Shute & Merchant was located, and she is the person who tipped me off about my first box from the company when it was up for auction on eBay. -- Roberta's website was wonderful, and I am so pleased that someone is slowly restoring it so others can enjoy the wonderful pieces of history she compiled. (Out of Gloucester -- on my links page.) -- If you happen to know who has redone her site, would love to contact them. -- thanks, Mary

Mary - What a wonderful website! Capt. George Merchant is my great-great-great grandfather. I'm descended from his daughter Emily who married Abraham Tarr. My parents have the same photo of George you have in the genealogy section. Written on the back it simply says "Pa Merchant". I would never have known anything about him or the other Merchants without your site! Thank you!::::denisealdendesigns@gmail.com

Hello,::::I have a small wooden box marked Slade Gorton & Co, and I am wondering how old it might be.::::The cover is marked as follows: one LB. Net, Trade Mark, Lily While, Grade A Gloucester Style, Codfish, Slade Gorton & Co., Rocky Ray Fishing Company Distributors. ::::The flank is marked: Product of Canada, Lily White, Salt Codfish, Slade Gorton & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, USA.::::The other flank is marked with recipes.::::One end describes how to freshen codfish.::::Thanks for your assistance!::Lynn::::

Lynn, Should you check back here is some info: Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. was founded in 1928 and is based in Boston, Massachusetts. There was another Slade Gorton company, which eventually became part of Gorton-Pew Fisheries. Don't know if there is any connection with that older firm and this one founded in 1928. Can't help you with the age of the box, but you might try to contact the company as it is still in business.

I have an old Davis Gloucester Fish Codfish Steaks wooden box from the Frank E Davis Fish Co. It says, "SOLD DIRECT TO FAMILIES BY MAIL". It was my mother's, and now mine. I was just curious as to how old it might be and if it is worth anything. It is a treasure to me even if it is worth nothing because it was my mother's. Nonetheless, I am still curious. My email is Mpamjenner@aol.com if you could provide me w/any info. Thank you for your time. -Angela Jenner

For someone who has lived a "land-locked" life, this is the most fascinating of websites! You have done a superlative job of resurrecting the fishing and tourism industry of Gloucester!::::I don't think I've ever seen a home w/more gables than that of the one on Cape Ann -- the Gardner Monson home. It is simply spectacular--something out of a fantasy fairytale. Does it still stand?::::cjoblack@comcast.net
