(1894 John Pew & Son article)

John Pew & Son was located in the heart of the Gloucester business district, and the entire facility occupied five acres of land. In 1894, when an article about the firm was published, they had a fleet of 17 vessels, which were said to be part of the best engaged in the business.

A large portion of the Pew firm's property were filled by flake yard -- they occupied several acres. This article goes on to note that when one tours this area and those filled with deep rows of hogsheads, that the air is redolent with the healthful odor of fresh and salt fish.

Both the 1877 invoice and the 1888 billhead used an image showing a portion of the John Pew & Son wharves. This firm was located just east of Vincent Cove, and included four wharves for their fleet of vessels.

Another point the 1894 article made was that John Pew & Son was the wealthiest and largest house in the fish industry of New England.
