A MAJOR PART OF GLOUCESTER'S HISTORY IS CENTERED AROUND THE HARBOR. MANY PEOPLE MADE THEIR LIVING AS PART OF THE FISHING INDUSTRY. SOME WERE THE FISHERMEN WHO RISKED -- SACRIFICED IN SOME CASES -- THEIR LIVES YEAR AFTER YEAR, GOING OUT AS PART OF THE GEORGES FLEET TO VARIOUS FISHING LOCATIONS FOR COD, HALIBUT AND MACKEREL. MANY OTHERS WORKED ON THE WHARVES SORTING, CLEANING AND PACKING FISH FOR MARKET. THE SCENIC BEAUTY OF THIS ACTIVE HARBOR WAS CAPTURED FROM MANY ANGLES, INCLUDING WHEN IT SOMETIMES FROZE SOLID IN THE WINTER.
